Works as a writer and editor in the Center for Southwest
Research at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. Could retire
now, but will probably retire in another six or seven years or when it
stops being fun. Spent most of his adult life in journalism and public
relations, neither profession being wholly (holy?) honorable, of course,
but that is merely a continuance of his life at Kodai which wasn't completely
blameless either. Though, of course, I blame my misdeeds at Kodai on the
company I was forced into.
Two daughters, one on the east coast in North Carolina, and the other
in California. Four granddaughters and two grandsons.
Favorite Kodai memory: Pitching firewood with David Nykerk and Peter Hoffman
as punishment for stealing the Communist Party flag and setting off the
air raid siren. If we hadn't done the latter, we would never have been
caught. There was also the night the world was supposed to end so (with
a different set of supporting characters) it was necessary to kill the
lights in study hall and knock over a rack of books at the precise time
of the ending. I don't remember what the punishment was for that.
As to the sugar in the gas tank episode, I don't believe you know who
did it yet. As we set around the campfire in Estes Park and it became
my turn all I said was, "Well, there is the sugar in the gas tank
. . ." at which point Nykerk began laughing so hard that it drowned
out the rest of what I said, which was simply, ". . . I know who
did it." Probably only the person standing closest to me heard that
part. Beyond that, I will say nothing further. Let it remain a mystery.
I don't plead guilty and I don't plead not guilty.
Still working on trying to sell my first novel. I recently entered it
in the Southwestern Writers Workshop annual contest and I just got back
the preliminary report, 60 points out of 60 possible points, but that
doesn't mean I've won anything like first, second or third place. I have
to wait a couple more months to learn that. If it ever does get sold and
published, I'll let you know.
